Heather Thompson, Family Law Attorney | NicholsonPham | Durham

Meet Heather Thompson

Heather S. Thompson is an Attorney at Law with a practice focused on family law and estate planning in North Carolina. She brings a unique blend of legal experience, business acumen, and compassionate advocacy to every client matter.

Heather began her legal career practicing family law in Durham, where she spent approximately four years representing clients in complex and emotionally charged matters. Her early work gave her a strong foundation in negotiation, litigation, and client-centered problem solving. She later joined her family’s business, serving as Controller and Chief Financial Officer for seven years, an experience that sharpened her financial insight and strategic decision-making skills—assets that now strongly inform her approach to both family law and estate planning cases.

From 2019 to 2021, Heather returned to active practice, handling criminal and traffic law, further broadening her courtroom experience and reinforcing her ability to advocate effectively under pressure. After a brief pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, Heather re-entered private practice and joined NicholsonPham in 2023, reuniting professionally with longtime colleague Meredith and continuing her commitment to high-quality, client-focused representation.

Heather earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (Economics) and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, followed by her Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from North Carolina Central University School of Law.

In addition to her legal practice, Heather is actively involved in the legal and local school community and currently serves as Treasurer of the Orange County Bar Association.

Known for her approachable demeanor and strong advocacy, Heather works closely with clients to understand their goals, guide them through difficult decisions, and protect what matters most to them—both now and for the future.

Heather speaks Spanish.
